What is the Partnership for a Zero-Waste Ottawa?

The Partnership for a Zero-Waste Ottawa is a joint project between the Plasco Energy Group and the City of Ottawa to build an evaluation facility at the Trail Road Landfill. This facility will use PlascoEnergy’s patented Plasco Conversion System to safely convert waste into clean and saleable products.

The project was approved by Ottawa City Council (fall 2005) and approval was granted by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (May 2006).  Over the evaluation period, the demonstration facility will process up to 85 tonnes/day of Municipal Solid Waste, producing enough electricity to power over 3,600 Ottawa homes.

Plasco Energy Group has agreed to finance all costs associated with building the evaluation facility and removing it if the evaluation is not a success. The City will provide the site, the waste and a $40 per tonne tipping fee—about the same as it cost the City to dump waste at private landfills.
